The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast a brief break in rainfall across several parts of the country. According to the latest weather outlook for March 11–17, Kenya Met predicts that the rains will subside midweek before picking up again towards the weekend.
However, some regions will continue experiencing rainfall, including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Nairobi County, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Southeastern Lowlands. The Coast and parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya will also receive intermittent showers.
The weatherman has outlined expected rainfall timings and intensity in different regions:
Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley
Counties affected: Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Kakamega.
- Thursday to Saturday: Light showers in some areas, with sunny intervals expected on Saturday.
- Sunday and Monday: Rainfall expected to return with showers in several places.
- Maximum Temperatures: Up to 35°C.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley (Including Nairobi)
Counties affected: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
- Thursday: Light morning rains, followed by afternoon showers in some areas.
- Friday and Saturday: Mostly sunny, with occasional showers.
- Sunday and Monday: Increased rainfall over several places.
- Maximum Temperatures: 30°C.
North-Western Kenya
Counties affected: Turkana and Samburu.
- Thursday to Saturday: Mostly sunny and dry conditions.
- Sunday and Monday: Showers expected in some areas.
- Maximum Temperatures: 39°C.
North-Eastern Kenya
Counties affected: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo.
- Thursday: Morning rains expected.
- Friday and Saturday: Mostly sunny with minimal rainfall.
- Sunday and Monday: Evening showers anticipated.
- Maximum Temperatures: 39°C.
South-Eastern Lowlands
Counties affected: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River.
- Thursday: Morning rains followed by afternoon showers.
- Friday and Saturday: Dry spell with sunny conditions.
- Sunday and Monday: Rainfall expected to return.
- Maximum Temperatures: 34°C.
Coastal Region
Counties affected: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, coastal Tana River.
- Thursday to Saturday: Mostly sunny conditions.
- Sunday and Monday: Rainfall expected in the afternoon and at night.
- Maximum Temperatures: 34°C.
Kenya Met Director David Gikungu advised that the forecast should be used alongside daily 24-hour weather updates issued by the department. County-specific forecasts are also available through the respective County Directors of Meteorological Services.
