The Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, formally announced vacancies for the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson roles in several parliamentary committees. The declaration follows the restructuring of committee memberships as part of the 13th Parliament’s fourth session.
The announcement, issued under Standing Order 179(2), came after lawmakers approved a revised committee composition during a House session on March 5, 2025. The reconstitution process, though routine, is crucial in shaping legislative oversight and policy formulation for the months ahead.
Legislators interested in contesting for the vacant positions have been directed to collect nomination papers from designated offices within the stipulated timeline. The affected committees play a significant role in parliamentary operations, making the upcoming leadership elections a key moment for legislative direction.
Gachagua Allies Lose Influence in Parliamentary Shake-Up
In a significant political shift, allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been removed from key parliamentary committees following a sweeping reshuffle. The restructuring, executed on Wednesday, March 5, has significantly curtailed Gachagua’s parliamentary influence.
The revised leadership list, tabled by the House Selection Committee, signals a growing dominance of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Parliament. ODM lawmakers are set to lead five critical departmental committees, including Labour, Budget, Regional Integration, Health, and Trade—positions traditionally held by members of the ruling coalition.
The shake-up comes amid President William Ruto’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Raila Odinga, following the opposition leader’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directed MPs to conduct elections for the new committee heads in line with parliamentary regulations.
“The Clerk will issue a schedule for the elections. Leadership changes are part of the House’s evolution, and it is essential to ensure smooth transitions,” Wetang’ula stated.
He further urged members to elect competent leaders, stressing that those chosen must be committed to their legislative responsibilities.
“Effective leadership demands accountability and dedication to House business,” he added.
