SGR train 14.8million passengers Since inception

Date:

Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service has ferried more than 14.8 million passengers between Nairobi and Mombasa since its launch in June 2017.

In addition to passenger transport, the SGR freight service has moved over 3.018 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and 38.47 million tonnes of cargo as of February 28, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Africa Star Railway Operation Company (AfriStar), the firm managing SGR operations and maintenance.

“We have achieved 2,831 days of safe SGR operations and remain committed to even greater milestones,” AfriStar noted in the statement.

Despite a decline in traffic, revenue from the SGR passenger service surged by thirty-six percent in the first nine months of 2024, according to the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC).

During this period, the SGR generated KSh2.9 billion (approximately 22.4 million U.S. dollars), up from 16.4 million dollars in the corresponding period in 2023.
