The New Year is often seen as a time for fresh beginnings, providing an opportunity to set new goals and embrace change. However, according to IntraPersonal Health Psychologist Dr. Evans Oloo, failing to plan properly can lead to unnecessary stress and mental strain.
Dr. Oloo emphasizes the importance of allowing yourself time to adjust to new responsibilities that come with seasonal transitions—whether it’s moving to a new school, starting a new job, or experiencing personal changes.
“It is important to give ourselves the allowance to settle into these new roles,” he advises.
Managing mental health during this period requires patience. Dr. Oloo likens it to “teething problems,” where initial struggles are expected when stepping into a new phase of life. He encourages individuals to acknowledge that adjusting takes time and that it’s okay not to have everything figured out immediately.
Reflecting on the past year can also be a useful exercise. By identifying what worked well and what didn’t, individuals can make necessary changes to improve their mental well-being.
“For instance, setting clearer boundaries at work or in relationships, practicing assertiveness, and avoiding impulsive actions can significantly boost mental health,” he explains.
Dr. Oloo highlights that emotions are closely tied to thoughts, and maintaining a positive mindset, even during challenges, can improve coping mechanisms.
“We can train ourselves to adopt realistic thinking and remind ourselves that everyone faces difficulties,” he suggests, adding that many people feel isolated in their struggles, but hardships are a shared experience.
Another key factor in mental well-being is fostering strong social connections. Dr. Oloo stresses the importance of seeking support from friends, family, or professional counselors without shame or stigma.
“We need to normalize reaching out for help. It’s okay not to be okay in 2025,” he states.
By focusing on adapting to change, setting healthy boundaries, building emotional resilience, and maintaining meaningful relationships, individuals can navigate the new year with a balanced mind and improved well-being.
