Government Pumps Sh7.8 Billion into Healthcare to Boost Taifa Care

Date:

The Government of Kenya has announced an additional allocation of Sh7.8 billion to enhance the treatment of chronic diseases and the provision of critical care services under the Taifa Care programme. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki made the announcement on Monday 17th , emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable healthcare services for all citizens.

In a supplementary budget set to be tabled in the National Assembly this week, Sh3 billion will be allocated to support chronic and critical illnesses, while another Sh3 billion will go toward the primary healthcare fund. Additionally, the government will inject Sh1.8 billion to bolster maternal healthcare services.

To ensure fair and data-driven healthcare funding, a new Means Testing Tool will be implemented from March 1, 2025. The tool is designed to provide a scientific and consistent assessment of all citizens registered with the Social Health Authority. Deputy President Kindiki noted that the revised system, developed with input from citizens and stakeholders, will create a predictable and tamper-proof premium payment structure.

“Successful implementation of the Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) programme is at the core of the Kenya Kwanza Administration’s economic transformation agenda. So far, 19.5 million Kenyans have registered, and efforts are underway to ensure that every citizen has medical cover,” said Kindiki. He further urged registered citizens to make their monthly contributions to sustain Taifa Care.

The announcement follows the recent withdrawal of funding for key healthcare programs by the United States government. However, Deputy President Kindiki through a detailed press statement reassured Kenyans that the government has developed contingency financing plans to prevent disruptions in service delivery.

The declaration came after the conclusion of the National and County Governments Health Summit at the DP’s official residence in Karen, which assessed the progress of Taifa Care and reached a consensus on necessary administrative and policy interventions to ensure efficient and sustainable UHC. The summit was attended by Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mulongo, Principal Secretaries, Council of Governors Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, Senior Advisor to the President’s Council of Economic Advisors Moses Kuria, as well as senior officials from both national and county governments and key health sector stakeholders.

The additional funding is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing quality medical services to all Kenyans.
