Three police officers were arrested on Wednesday morning at the Globe Cinema roundabout in Nairobi following an operation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). The officers, who are attached to the Central Police Station, were found extorting money from motorists under the guise of enforcing traffic regulations.
The arrests came after numerous complaints from motorists, boda boda riders, and members of the public regarding rampant bribery at the roundabout. Following extensive investigations, the EACC confirmed the allegations and launched a sting operation that led to the officers’ apprehension.
The arrested officers have been identified as:
- Cpl Oscar Serem Biwott (Service No. 84220)
- PC Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik (Service No. 89197)
- PC Edwin Benedict Mubweka (Service No. 82069)
During the two-hour operation conducted from 6:30 am, the three officers were found to have collected bribes amounting to Kes 48,250. They were immediately taken to the EACC Integrity Centre for questioning before being booked at Kilimani Police Station.
The EACC has reiterated its commitment to tackling corruption within the police service. As part of its strategic anti-corruption initiatives, the commission has partnered with the National Police Service (NPS) to conduct a comprehensive audit of police operations. This initiative aims to identify and seal systemic loopholes that facilitate corruption in traffic law enforcement and other policing activities across the country.
Members of the public have been urged to report cases of police corruption and other unethical conduct through official EACC reporting channels. The Commission emphasized that efforts to curb corruption require collective action from both authorities and citizens to foster accountability and transparency in public service.
