Government Kickstarts Isiolo-Wajir-Mandera Road Project Promised by President Ruto

Date:

The Kenyan government has begun laying the groundwork for the construction of the 705km Isiolo-Wajir-Mandera road, a major infrastructure project promised by President William Ruto during his recent tour of the Northeastern region.

During his visit, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the historically marginalized region through improved infrastructure, security, and economic development. Among his key pledges were the construction of roads, the enhancement of water supply projects, and the expansion of security operations to curb banditry and terrorism threats. He also emphasized the need to integrate Northeastern Kenya into the national economy, citing infrastructure as a key driver of growth.

In an update shared by the Ministry of Interrior, a strategic meeting was held on Wednesday 12th, chaired by Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, alongside Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, discussions focused on unlocking and securing the critical transport corridor.

The road, which is being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is expected to play a vital role in improving connectivity and trade within the region. It will also serve as a crucial link between Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project.

The Isiolo-Wajir-Mandera road is part of broader efforts by the government to enhance development in the Northeastern region, addressing long-standing challenges such as poor road networks, insecurity, and limited access to essential services. The project is expected to boost trade, facilitate movement, and improve security, offering residents new opportunities for economic growth.

The government has reiterated its commitment to delivering the project efficiently, ensuring that Northeastern Kenya is no longer left behind in national development efforts.
