Loud Matatu Music Banned in Nairobi CBD

Date:

Nairobi County government has officially banned loud music in matatus operating within the Central Business District (CBD) to restore order and reduce noise pollution.

Speaking on the directive during a live podcast, Geoffrey Mosiria, the County Chief Officer for Environment, emphasized that matatus must switch off their music while picking up passengers in town.

“What we are guiding is that don’t play loud music while in town. Just switch off the music, get your passengers, and switch on the music once you are out of town. Those touts—we don’t need their noise. They should also use placards to call passengers because there must be order,” Mosiria stated.

This arises as the Matatu operators, hawkers and the county government continue to lock horns over disagreements a situation which has continued to spark series of protests and paralyze normal transport operations within the CBD.

The move comes as part of the county’s broader efforts to improve the city’s environment and create a more organized public transport system. Operators who defy the directive risk penalties as enforcement measures take effect.
