The government of Kenya is set to roll out steam cooking in a move to replace the traditional wood and charcoal fires across the country. While launching a pilot project in Garissa High school on Thursday 6th President William Ruto announced that his government is taking a major step to revolutionize how food is prepared in the Kenyan schools.
According to the president, the project is part of the global effort to reduce the use of firewood and shift to other cleaner methods as source of energy.
“The steam cooking carbon asset project being piloted by the Government at Garissa High School is part of a broader global effort to reduce the use of firewood in school cooking in favor of cleaner alternatives. The program will soon be rolled out in schools across the country,” the president reported oh his official social media handles.

Steam cooking is a healthy and efficient method of preparing food using steam instead of direct heat or oil. It helps retain nutrients, moisture, and natural flavors while avoiding the need for added fats.
Scientific research has shown that steam cooking should be widely adopted due to its energy efficiency, low carbon footprint, and health benefits. It requires less heat and energy compared to frying or baking, reducing greenhouse gas emissions when using electricity or gas. This method also preserves nutrients, minimizes food waste, and eliminates the need for unhealthy fats, promoting better public health.
If the project is fully implemented across the country, then Kenya will be another step in the global efforts to conserve the environment.
