The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has shut down Ty Woods K Ltd, a factory in Nakuru County, over environmental pollution concerns.
In a statement dated Wednesday, February 5, NEMA said the closure followed an inspection that revealed multiple violations, including fugitive emissions from leakages in the boiler area and other sections of the facility.
According to the authority, the factory failed to comply with an Environmental Restoration Order issued on August 6, 2024, and also lacked an Emissions License as required by the Air Quality Regulations 2024.
“The company will remain closed until adequate measures are taken to control emissions, conduct dispersion modeling, contain oil spills, clean up the compound, and engage a licensed waste handler for proper disposal of waste,” NEMA stated.
The authority further directed the factory owner to install an Effluent Treatment Plant and meet all regulatory requirements before operations can resume.
Last month, NEMA in a statement In a statement arevealed that an inspection of the facility on January 22, 2025, uncovered several violations of air pollution regulations.
The company was found to be in non-compliance with the Stack Emissions License requirements under the Environmental Management and Coordination (Air Quality) Regulations of 2014. This led to the malfunctioning of one of their stacks, which has since been fixed.
As part of the directive, the company was given 21 days to initiate stack emissions measurements and apply for a stack emissions license from NEMA.
The move follows public outcry from residents in the area who reported health issues, including eye allergies, due to the factory’s emissions.
Some residents also criticized the government for its slow response despite numerous complaints being raised online.
