The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, through the Boma Yangu Programme, has outlined a step-by-step process for Kenyans interested in purchasing affordable houses under the government’s initiative.

According to the ministry, the process begins with Step 1: Register for Affordable Housing, where applicants must sign up on the Boma Yangu platform or use the USSD code *832#. This registration ensures applicants are recognized and eligible to proceed.

In Step 2: Save for Your Home Deposit, applicants are required to save towards their home deposit through the Boma Yangu savings wallet. Payments can be made online or at citizen support centers, with the saved amount serving as the home deposit.

Step 3: Prequalification for a Home Loan involves an assessment by financial institutions partnered with Boma Yangu. These institutions evaluate an applicant’s income and creditworthiness before offering an affordable home loan.

Under Step 4: Application for Allocation to Purchase a Home, applicants select their preferred house from available options on the platform and submit applications for allocation.

Step 5: Allocation Decision entails an automated ranking system used to fairly allocate homes. The Affordable Housing Board then communicates the decision to the applicants and provides details on the next steps.

Once allocated, applicants proceed to Step 6: Sign Agreement, where they sign the necessary contracts based on their selected payment plans.

The final stage, Step 7: Home Unit Handover, sees successful applicants receiving their keys and moving into their new homes. Ownership documents will be provided after full payment completion.

DP Kindiki Defends Affordable Housing Project

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has emphasized the importance of the Affordable Housing Project, stating that it not only helps Kenyans become homeowners but also creates employment opportunities.

Speaking on Thursday while inspecting the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi, Kindiki highlighted the economic impact of the initiative, saying it has enabled many workers to support their families.

“Many people have been asking about the fate of the employees of the Affordable Housing Project after the houses are finished. For now, our business is to create any available job,” Kindiki stated.

He further noted that the programme is boosting the economy by expanding businesses that supply materials and services for the project.

“Those businesses are making more sales, and therefore this programme is generating more revenue, creating wealth, and expanding businesses to employ more people,” he added.

The DP also pointed out that the manufacturing sector has experienced significant growth due to the demand for construction materials, reinforcing the project’s role in economic development.
