Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued a statement addressing concerns over deteriorating officiating standards and rising cases of violence against match officials in various leagues across the country.
The latest incident occurred on Sunday at the MPESA Foundation in Thika, where individuals allegedly linked to Migori Youth FC assaulted referees and a police officer after a late goal by Nairobi United secured a 2-1 victory. Migori Youth players and officials disputed the goal, claiming it was offside, though replays confirmed the referee’s decision was correct.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent episodes in Kenyan football, sparking calls for FKF to take decisive action. Some stakeholders have also accused the federation of contributing to poor officiating standards through delayed payments to referees, raising concerns about possible match manipulation.
In response, FKF acknowledged the concerns, emphasizing its commitment to improving officiating through referee development and capacity-building programs.
“Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the standard of officiating in our leagues. We recognize the crucial role referees play in upholding fairness and the integrity of the game,” the statement read.
The federation reaffirmed its ongoing efforts to enhance officiating standards across all leagues, stressing the need for consistency and quality in match officiating.
“As part of our commitment to improving officiating standards, FKF continues to prioritize referee development and capacity-building initiatives. Steps are already underway to enhance the quality and consistency of officiating,” FKF added.
FKF also condemned the increasing violence against referees and security personnel, warning that strict action would be taken against those involved.
“FKF strongly condemns any form of hooliganism, including attacks on match officials and security personnel. Such incidents have no place in football, and individuals found culpable will face strict disciplinary action. The relevant FKF committees will review recent cases and take appropriate measures in line with established regulations.”
The federation concluded by reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a fair, safe, and competitive football environment in Kenya.
