Billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader His Highness the Aga Khan IV has passed away at the age of 88, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) announced on Tuesday.

Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, died peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, surrounded by his family, according to a statement released by his charitable organization.

“His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, in the presence of his family,” read part of the statement.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) noted that details regarding his successor would be shared in due course.

“The announcement of his designated successor will follow. Leaders and staff of the Aga Khan Development Network extend their deepest condolences to his family and the Ismaili community worldwide. As we honour his legacy, we remain committed to his vision of improving the quality of life for communities across the world, regardless of religious or ethnic background,” the statement added.

A Life of Service and Philanthropy

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV assumed the role of Imam in 1957 at the age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III. Over the decades, he played a pivotal role in promoting social and economic development, particularly in vulnerable communities worldwide.

Through the Aga Khan Development Network, he spearheaded initiatives in education, healthcare, cultural preservation, and economic development, reinforcing Islam’s principles of compassion, tolerance, and human dignity. His philanthropic work spanned more than six decades, with projects in Africa, Asia, and beyond.
