The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a directive to a wood processing company in Njoro, Nakuru County, to take corrective action after complaints of air pollution.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 30, NEMA revealed that an inspection of the facility on January 22, 2025, uncovered several violations of air pollution regulations.
The company was found to be in non-compliance with the Stack Emissions License requirements under the Environmental Management and Coordination (Air Quality) Regulations of 2014. This led to the malfunctioning of one of their stacks, which has since been fixed.
As part of the directive, the company was given 21 days to initiate stack emissions measurements and apply for a stack emissions license from NEMA.
Failure to comply will result in further action.
The move follows public outcry from residents in the area who reported health issues, including eye allergies, due to the factory’s emissions.
Some residents also criticized the government for its slow response despite numerous complaints being raised online.
