The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has called for the nullification of Aisha Jumwa Katana’s appointment as the Chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB), citing her lack of professional qualifications and what they term an inappropriate appointment process.
Jumwa, who previously served as the Gender Cabinet Secretary, was appointed to the position by President William Ruto for a three-year term effective January 17, 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, IEK President Shammah Kiteme argued that Jumwa’s appointment does not align with the Kenya Roads Board Act, which requires the chairperson to be selected from nominees of professional organizations listed in the Act’s First Schedule.
Kiteme emphasized the need for a leader with expertise in civil, structural, or transport engineering to effectively oversee KRB’s technical mandate.
“To ensure the Kenya Roads Board leadership aligns with its legal framework and technical demands, appointments should prioritize individuals with relevant professional backgrounds,” Kiteme said.
Call for Technical Expertise
Kiteme further highlighted the critical role of KRB in road infrastructure development, which includes overseeing road conditions, advising on construction standards, and ensuring the technical effectiveness of projects.
“A leader with hands-on engineering experience is essential to achieving these objectives and addressing the challenges in road infrastructure development,” he added.
Broader Implications
The IEK’s call for the revocation of Jumwa’s appointment underscores the broader need for qualified technical leadership in key infrastructure bodies. According to Kiteme, placing individuals with relevant expertise in such roles ensures the effective delivery of infrastructure projects and adherence to professional standards.
The IEK has urged the government to reconsider the appointment and ensure that future selections for technical institutions prioritize merit and qualifications to safeguard the integrity of critical sectors such as road infrastructure.
