Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended two suspects linked to a series of thefts from locked motor vehicles in Embakasi, Nairobi.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 23, 2025, DCI reported that the arrests followed a well-coordinated operation by detectives from DCI Embakasi and the Manager of the NCBA Bank Utawala branch.

“Charles Mulwa Mwema and Shaban Maingi Rashid, who have a history of stealing from locked motor vehicles parked outside banking halls, have been apprehended,” read part of the DCI statement.

The suspects are accused of multiple car break-ins, including an incident reported on November 23, 2024, at Bensquare Police Post, where they allegedly stole KSh500,000 from a locked vehicle.

The two are currently being held at a police station in Utawala as investigations continue. They are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

This incident mirrors another case on June 5, 2024, when four police officers were among six suspects arrested for stealing over KSh400,000 from a locked car in Mihango, Nairobi County.

In that case, DCI detectives handling the theft received intelligence linking two main suspects to the crime. The suspects were believed to reside in the Utawala area.

When detectives arrived at the location to arrest them, they discovered that unknown individuals had already apprehended the suspects earlier that morning. Witnesses reported seeing the arrests being carried out by people driving a white Subaru car.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to curb the rise in such crimes.
