A significant fire broke out at the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall on Wednesday night, resulting in substantial damage to the historic building.
The blaze reportedly originated in the kitchen of a restaurant within the structure before rapidly spreading to other sections, including parts of the administration offices.
Central Police OCPD Stephen Okal stated that the fire was initially contained past midnight, only to reignite at around 5 a.m. on Thursday.
“The fire brigade was recalled to the scene early Thursday morning to help extinguish the new flames. They have since managed to contain it,” said Okal.
No injuries were reported, but property of unknown value was destroyed. “This is a historic structure, and the damage caused is immense. Fire experts will investigate the cause and take necessary action,” he added.
Videos circulating online showed the intensity of the blaze, with thick smoke and flames visible across the campus. Kenyans on social media mobilized to raise awareness, urging authorities to act swiftly.
Meanwhile, police were deployed to deter looters who had rushed to the scene to exploit the chaos.
The incident comes at a critical time for the university, as students were preparing for scheduled exams. John Orindi, the head of communications at the University of Nairobi, stated that further updates on the situation would be issued later.
The affected Taifa Hall is a significant structure within the University of Nairobi, which is the oldest higher-learning institution in Kenya. Its damage has been described as a cultural and educational loss.
Fire experts are expected to commence investigations into the incident to determine the exact cause.
