The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Monday, January 13, refuted claims that it had revised academic qualifications for individuals pursuing degrees or diplomas in education.

In a statement, TSC dismissed a viral social media post as fake, urging the public to rely on its official website, http://tsc.go.ke, for accurate information. “Beware of fake news! The requirements for persons wishing to join the teaching service are outlined on our website. Stay informed,” the statement read.

“To avoid future disappointments, kindly take note of the following updated requirements and share this information with people interested in the teaching profession,” the fake post read.

TSC dismisses reports of revising academic qualifications for individuals intending to pursue Degree and diploma in Education

According to the misleading post, individuals intending to pursue a degree in education were required to meet the following minimum grade requirements:

  • B- in both Mathematics and English
  • C+ in the teaching subjects of interest
  • C+ as the overall mean grade in KCSE

It further highlighted the minimum grades for individuals intending to pursue a diploma in education:

  • D+ in Mathematics
  • C in English
  • C+ as the overall mean grade in KCSE

Minimum grade requirements for pursuing a Degree and Diploma in Education 

However, according to TSC, individuals intending to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education must meet the following requirements:


  1. Minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent
  2. C+ (plus) in two subjects of specialization

For a Diploma in Education, individuals must meet the following requirements:

  1. Minimum grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE and above
  2. C+ (plus) in the two subjects of specialization
  3. At least C (plain) in English
  4. C (plain) in Mathematics for science-based courses
  5. D+ (plus) in Mathematics for non-science-based courses

For a Diploma in Education for visually and hearing-impaired individuals, the following requirements apply:

  1. Minimum grade of C (plain) in KCSE and above
  2. At least C- (minus) in English
  3. C- (minus) in Mathematics for science-based courses
  4. D (plain) in Mathematics for non-science-based courses

Elsewhere, TSC announced the deployment of primary school teachers to junior secondary schools.

In an announcement on Monday, January 13, the commission noted that the move is in line with the government’s commitment to strengthen the education system and ensure that the transition from primary to junior secondary schools is seamless.
