Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended three suspects linked to the murder of Aisha Abubakar, an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official.

Aisha was brutally killed on January 5, 2025, at her residence in Utange Mkunguni, Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa.

In a statement shared on its social media platforms, the DCI identified the suspects as Isa Omari, Brian Shikuku Mudari, and Bryan Templer Oyare. The arrests followed a week-long manhunt, culminating in coordinated operations within the coastal region.

According to the detectives, the attackers gained access to Aisha’s house by cutting through the kitchen window grills. Armed with crude weapons, they subdued her son before stabbing Aisha multiple times, ignoring her desperate pleas for mercy.

The assailants stole several valuables, including two Samsung phones, an iPad, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and ATM cards. They also coerced Aisha to provide the PINs for the stolen cards.

“As she bled her life out, the cold-blooded attackers made away with several valuables,” read part of the DCI statement.

Neighbors, alarmed by the commotion, rushed to Aisha’s aid and transported her to Premier Hospital in Nyali. Tragically, she was declared dead upon arrival.

“Frantic efforts to save her life by rushing her to Premier Hospital in Nyali were made, but she was declared dead on arrival,” the DCI added.

The investigation, spearheaded by the DCI’s Kisauni office with support from the Operation Support Unit and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, included forensic analysis that helped identify the suspects.

During the operation to apprehend them, detectives recovered one of the stolen phones and other key pieces of evidence.

Aisha Abubakar’s death has sparked outrage in the local community and nationwide, with many calling for swift justice and improved security measures to protect public servants.

The DCI emphasized that investigations are ongoing to uncover further details about the case.

The suspects remain in custody as detectives continue piecing together the events leading up to the murder.

The tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of public officials and the need for heightened security measures to protect them from targeted attacks.
