Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has called on the government to take decisive action against individuals involved in the abductions of young Kenyans, which began in June 2024.
Addressing a press briefing on Sunday, January 12, 2025, Muturi expressed deep concern over the continued abductions, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the issue. He also shared the emotional toll his family endured following the abduction of his son, Leslie Muturi, in June 2024.
“I have personally suffered as my son was abducted and disappeared. I was not sure whether he was alive or dead, leaving me, my wife, and my family in turmoil,” Muturi stated.
Muturi revealed that Leslie was allegedly kidnapped on a Saturday night in the Lavington area of Nairobi and later freed by unknown individuals. Despite more than six months since the ordeal, Muturi lamented that no charges had been filed, and no explanations had been provided regarding the abduction.
“It must be remembered that I was the Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya at the time, yet I was unable to trace my son despite making several requests and demands to all levels of the security apparatus,” he added.
The Public Service CS criticized the government’s lack of accountability and demanded answers regarding the rising number of abductions.
“Kenyans want to know how many of our youth have been taken since these abductions started, how many have been released, how many are still being held, and where they are being held,” Muturi stated.
Muturi also pointed out that while the National Police Service has denied involvement in the abductions, they have failed to prevent these incidents, which are reportedly happening in broad daylight.
“The government cannot be excused for abdicating its duty to protect the lives and property of the people of Kenya. Saying it knows nothing about the abductions is a failure in accountability,” he said.
Muturi noted that following his initial statements, some young people had been released, but many others remained unaccounted for.
“I note that after my statement, several young people were released, but from the reports we see, many are still being held,” he explained.
The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the need for the government to fulfill its responsibility and ensure the safety of all citizens while bringing those behind the abductions to justice.
