President Ruto Heads to Uganda for AU Summit on Agriculture

President William Ruto departed Kenya on the morning of Saturday, January 11, for a one-day official visit to Kampala, Uganda.

According to a statement by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, Ruto will be attending the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

At the summit, the President is expected to highlight Kenya’s progress in tackling food security and poverty under his administration.

“CAADP, a key AU Agenda 2063 initiative, seeks to eradicate hunger and poverty through agriculture-led development and transform Africa’s agri-food systems,” the statement read in part.

The summit aims to assess progress towards the programme’s targets and adopt the Kampala Declaration, which outlines a shared vision for transforming agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035. The outcomes are anticipated to shape agricultural policies that drive economic growth and achieve food security across the continent.

In addition to attending the summit, President Ruto is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

“The discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and building consensus for his role as Champion of AU Institutional Reforms, ahead of his inaugural progress report on the reform agenda,” State House indicated.

This marks Ruto’s second international trip of the year. Earlier in January, he traveled to Ghana to attend the inauguration of President John Mahama.
