The United States Embassy has announced it will close its offices on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 8, the Embassy stated that the closure is part of the nationwide observance to honor the life and legacy of President Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

“Normal operations will resume on Friday, January 10. In observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, the U.S. Embassy will be closed on Thursday, January 9,” read the statement in part.

Following Carter’s passing, U.S. President Joe Biden issued directives outlining how the nation and its representatives abroad would mark the day.

“I direct that, for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half-staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations,” Biden’s statement read.

He further designated January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning and urged Americans to come together in remembrance.

“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I also invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,” Biden added.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is remembered for his contributions to human rights, peace efforts, and public service. The National Day of Mourning will see flags flown at half-staff across the country and at U.S. facilities abroad as a mark of respect.

The U.S. Embassy’s closure aligns with these directives, ensuring diplomatic missions worldwide observe the solemn occasion.
