A 23-year-old nanny has been arrested following a violent robbery at her employer’s residence in Eastleigh, Nairobi, after an intensive weeks-long manhunt.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Tuesday evening that the suspect, identified as Nabalayo Everline Loice, was apprehended in Kariokor as she attempted to board a bus headed for Uganda. She is accused of conspiring with a male accomplice to carry out the robbery on November 1, 2024.
Surveillance footage from the day of the incident reportedly captures the nanny collaborating with her accomplice. The video shows the man forcing his way into the home after the nanny hesitated to grant him access. Once inside, the intruder pursued and brutally attacked a 20-year-old house help who was attempting to flee.
According to the DCI, the attacker used a hammer to inflict grievous injuries on the house help, who fell near the kitchen door during the assault. The footage also shows the nanny leaving the house alongside the assailant after the pair stole valuables, including gold jewelry, a laptop, a phone, and cash totaling Sh335,000.
“Reports filed at Pangani Police Station indicate the duo assaulted another house help, leaving her for dead in the bathroom,” the DCI stated.
The stolen items included a gold set worth Sh210,000, a Lenovo XY laptop valued at Sh110,000, and an Infinix phone priced at Sh15,000.
The victim, who sustained severe injuries, was discovered with a broken tooth and multiple wounds on her head, hands, and legs. Authorities also observed signs of whipping on her body.
The employer, who was out with his children during the robbery, had entrusted the care of the home to the two house helps. His wife was reportedly receiving medical treatment in India at the time.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is undergoing processing ahead of her arraignment. The search for her male accomplice, who remains at large, is still ongoing.
“The manhunt for her accomplice is in full swing,” the DCI emphasized in a statement.
