Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has joined his allies in demanding the formation of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate five critical issues threatening Kenyans’ safety and democratic rights.
In a statement dated January 7, Gachagua expressed deep concern over recent abductions and alleged state-sanctioned human rights violations. He emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing insecurity and protect fundamental freedoms.
Gachagua lauded leaders stepping forward to address these issues, accusing the state of downplaying their gravity.
“I strongly associate myself with this call for an independent commission of inquiry on abductions. We must uncover these gross human rights violations, prosecute those responsible, and ensure such actions never happen again,” he stated.
Why the Inquiry Is Needed
Gachagua and his allies believe that a transparent investigation will expose attempts to suppress dissent and stifle democracy.
“This open process will provide a transparent forum for the world to see the extent to which this regime suppresses independent voices critical of its policies—an essential aspect of any democracy,” he added.
Gachagua and allied legislators, led by Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, outlined five pressing concerns for the proposed commission to investigate:
- Abductions and Extrajudicial Killings
The legislators highlighted the alarming rise in abductions targeting government critics, which have sparked concerns among Kenyans, religious leaders, and international organizations. - Politicization of the Police
They alleged that security agencies have been weaponized for political purposes, intimidating and persecuting dissenting voices. - Resurgence of Criminal Gangs
The lawmakers accused the government of sponsoring gangs, including the notorious Mungiki, to terrorize citizens and silence critics. - State Capture and Corruption
They pointed to the misuse of public resources, including land grabbing and awarding government contracts to individuals linked to the ruling elite. - Political Violence
The legislators raised concerns over violent attacks targeting Gachagua and his supporters, such as the chaotic events in Limuru and the teargas incident in Nyandarua on December 28, 2024.
The lawmakers cited specific instances of land theft, including cases in Kiambu, Ruiru, Naivasha, and Nakuru, as evidence of widespread corruption threatening public trust and institutional integrity.
“These acts of land theft, coupled with the misuse of public resources, undermine the welfare of Kenyans and the integrity of our institutions,” they noted.
Gachagua’s allies urged Parliament and county assemblies to convene special sessions to address these issues. They emphasized the need for stronger public safety measures and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
“This commission must investigate these matters comprehensively to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights, and restore public confidence in our institutions,” the lawmakers stated.

In conclusion, Gachagua reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring justice and holding perpetrators accountable. “We demand swift, decisive action to restore justice, uphold democracy, and safeguard the rights of all Kenyans,” he said.
The call for an inquiry comes amid growing public concern over governance, security, and respect for human rights in Kenya.
