US Embassy Issues Alert Over Planned Protests in Kenya
The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued a caution to its citizens regarding protests scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2025, in various parts of the country.
In its demonstration alert, the Embassy highlighted the possibility of peaceful protests escalating into violence. It also warned of increased police checkpoints, which could lead to significant traffic disruptions on major roads in Nairobi and other areas.
“There have been calls for nationwide anti-government protests across Kenya on Monday, January 6, 2025. Demonstrations in central business districts and potential road blockages on major thoroughfares are possible,” the statement read in part.
“Protests that seem peaceful can turn violent at any moment. Police checkpoints and traffic disruptions can be expected,” it added.
The Embassy urged US citizens to monitor local media reports before using major roads and to avoid crowds or large gatherings. Travelers were advised to ensure vehicle doors are locked and windows rolled up for safety.
Additionally, citizens were encouraged to carry passports at all times, notify friends and family of their whereabouts, and review personal security plans.
“Notify friends and family of your whereabouts and safety. Review your personal security plans,” the advisory read in part.
The planned demonstrations follow recent incidents of abductions in the country. Several young men who had reportedly gone missing were released on Monday morning, including Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti, who have since reunited with their families.
The protests are expected to address these incidents and other grievances, with organizers calling for nationwide action. The Embassy’s alert serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of US citizens amid the planned events.
