The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a temporary disruption in eCitizen Payment Services due to technical difficulties.

In a notice issued on Friday, January 3, KRA advised users to use alternative payment methods, including bank transfers and Point of Sale (PDQ) machines, to avoid delays.

“We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with eCitizen Payment Services. To ensure your payments are processed without delay, please use your bank payment options or PDQs.

“Our technical team is actively working to resolve the issue and restore services as soon as possible. Any inconvenience caused is highly regrettable,” read the notice.

The outage, which persisted for the better part of Friday, significantly disrupted services, including tourist payments at Nairobi National Park. Tourists were unable to process entry fees via the mandatory eCitizen platform, resulting in long queues and extended delays at the park’s entrance.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the disruption had not been disclosed.

This is not the first time the eCitizen platform has experienced interruptions.

In October 2024, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano intervened after German Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth reported challenges using the platform.

Groth highlighted difficulties in paying for entry fees to Watamu Marine Park, remarking, “I really like Watamu Marine Park for a nice snorkeling tour. But getting the ticket via eCitizen is more difficult than seeing the big fish.”

In response, Miano assured the ambassador that the issue would be addressed, emphasizing the platform’s intended efficiency.

“Happy Mazingira Day, Ambassador. I will take this up to ensure the difficulty is resolved. eCitizen is supposed to be efficient and speedy. Thank you for the feedback,” Miano stated at the time.

As efforts to restore eCitizen services continue, users are encouraged to utilize alternative payment methods to avoid further inconvenience.
