President William Ruto has reprimanded contractors over delays in completing key projects, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to timely delivery.

While inspecting the stalled construction of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County on January 1, 2024, President Ruto expressed frustration at the slow pace of work, terming it unacceptable.

“It is disappointing that this project, which was supposed to take months, has dragged on for years. The people of Kakamega deserve better,” he stated.

The President called out the contractor, accusing him of a pattern of neglect.

“You are a notorious contractor for abandoning projects. You start work here, do a little, then move to another site. That is not acceptable. If you cannot complete the work, be honest so we can hire someone else,” Ruto said.

The contractor defended himself, assuring the President of his dedication and commitment to finishing the project.

“I’m not holding anyone ransom. I promise you I will be dedicated,” the contractor said.

In response, Ruto said, “You cannot be on-site as a tourist. We need to see progress.”

The President directed that the stadium must be completed by June 2026, ensuring it would be operational by that time.

Kisii Cancer Centre Woes

During a separate inspection of the Kisii Cancer Centre, Ruto also criticized delays in the project, issuing a stern warning to the contractor.

“This is unacceptable. You will get a final warning,” the President told the contractor, instructing Medical Services PS Harry Kimtai to summon the contractor for a meeting on January 3.

“I was here three months ago, and we agreed on what needs to be done, but it’s not happening,” Ruto said.

He warned that failure to improve progress would lead to the termination of the contract.

“If you do not pull up your socks, we will terminate your contract and get another contractor to complete the project. It’s as simple as that,” Ruto stated.

A Clear Warning to All Contractors

President Ruto used his social media platforms to caution contractors against delaying government projects.

“We have laid a strong foundation to accelerate the fulfilment of our promises to the people. Contractors delaying key programmes will not be tolerated,” he wrote.

The President’s remarks highlight his administration’s determination to ensure accountability and timely delivery of development projects.
