Kenya Airways has announced the resumption of flights to Dzaoudzi (DZA) in Mayotte, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing connectivity within the Indian Ocean region.
In a statement dated December 31, the national carrier expressed optimism that the reinstated flights will boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Kenya and the French overseas territory.
Mayotte, an island situated between Madagascar and Mozambique, experienced a temporary suspension of flights due to damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Chido to its airport infrastructure.
“Following the temporary suspension due to the significant damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Chido to airport infrastructure, we are ready to welcome our customers back.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this situation may have caused, and we want to assure you that your safety, along with that of our team, remains our highest priority,” the airline noted in the statement.
Kenya Airways on Comoros Flights Resumption
Kenya Airways had resumed flights to Comoros earlier on December 16, following the reopening of airports in the region. However, services to Mayotte remained suspended pending safety clearance.
Cyclone Chido, which formed in the Indian Ocean in early December, brought torrential rain, strong winds, and towering waves to countries such as Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros, and northern Mozambique.
The storm caused widespread disruptions, including flight cancellations and government-issued warnings across the region.
In response to the cyclone’s impact, Kenya Airways suspended flights to Comoros and Mayotte on December 14 to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
Beyond the islands, Cyclone Chido’s effects extended inland, causing above-average rainfall in parts of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and northern South Africa.
“Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to impact the islands of Comoros and Mayotte, along with other countries, starting today.
“Authorities in these regions have issued alerts, with the cyclone forecasted to persist until Monday, December 16, 2024,” the airline had announced in an earlier statement.
With the resumption of flights to Mayotte, Kenya Airways continues its commitment to restoring normalcy and ensuring passenger safety while fostering regional connectivity.
