The driver, conductor, and owner of a matatu filmed driving recklessly along the Nairobi-Nyeri highway have been arrested and fined.
In a statement on Friday, December 27, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirmed that the driver was fined Ksh120,000 and had their license suspended for one year.
The matatu’s owner was fined Ksh20,000, while the conductor, identified as the owner’s son, received a penalty of Ksh12,000.
The three appeared before Kenol Law Courts, where they faced charges related to their reckless actions.
Central Region Traffic Commandant Elizabeth Vivi called on the owner of a second matatu, also caught in the viral video, to surrender to the nearest police station within 24 hours.
“We urge all road users to prioritize safety. As you travel back to the cities after the festive season, remember to adhere to traffic rules. We are monitoring highways closely, and I urge the second vehicle’s owner to present themselves to authorities without delay,” Vivi said.
The viral footage showed both matatus dangerously swerving across the highway as some passengers hung precariously out of the windows.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had earlier announced increased road safety operations, including joint crackdowns by NTSA and law enforcement, to curb recklessness during the festive period.
Kanja appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules and cooperate with officers to ensure safety.
“Everyone has a role in promoting road safety. We urge all travelers and drivers to act responsibly and help prevent accidents during this festive season,” Kanja emphasized.
