President William Ruto has joined countless Kenyans in mourning the passing of volleyball icon Janet Wanja, who succumbed to gallbladder cancer on Friday.

In a heartfelt message shared on his social media platforms, the Head of State described Wanja as a talented and disciplined athlete who served Kenyan sports with dedication and honour.

“Janet Wanja was focused, hardworking, and a team player. Her commitment to sports remains an inspiration. May it be a source of comfort to her family, friends, and the sports fraternity that we are keeping them in our prayers during this challenging time,” Ruto wrote.

The President also expressed his sorrow over Wanja’s battle with cancer, stating, “One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja.”

Wanja’s family, through her brother Kevin Kimani, confirmed her death in an interview with a local radio station.

“The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing after a brave battle with cancer,” Kimani said.

He extended gratitude to the Kenya Pipeline Company for supporting Wanja throughout her illness, as well as to the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and friends of the family.

Further updates on the funeral arrangements will be shared in due course, Kimani noted.

Wanja’s illness began in August, shortly after her return from the Paris Olympics, where she served as the Malkia Strikers’ fitness trainer.

Her illustrious career included representing Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics and winning the Women’s African Volleyball Championship with the Malkia Strikers in 2007. She earned numerous individual accolades, solidifying her legacy in Kenyan sports.

News of Wanja’s passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from Kenya’s sporting community.

Harambee Stars Captain Michael Olunga, currently playing in Qatar, mourned her loss, saying:
“Gone too soon, champ. Your contribution to volleyball in Kenya and the sports industry was immense and will never go unnoticed. Rest in peace, champ and legend. My thoughts are with her family during this difficult period.”

Wanja’s death marks a significant loss for Kenyan sports, leaving a void that will be felt across the nation.
