Faith Kipyegon delivered a sensational performance to break the 1500m world record at the Golden Gala Diamond League meeting in Florence on Friday (2 June).

Kenyan athletes are set to gain significantly from the increased prize money in the Wanda Diamond League starting in 2025, as the competition implements a new financial structure aimed at rewarding athletes at all performance levels.

This development comes as a major boost for Kenyan track and field athletes, who have consistently showcased their prowess on the global stage.

The revised structure introduces higher top prizes for individual athletes and increases rewards for lower-finishing competitors, ensuring financial benefits for a broader range of participants.

Athletes finishing between 9th and 12th will now receive fixed prize money in all disciplines, a notable change that will benefit many Kenyan athletes who often compete in highly competitive fields.

Under the new structure, the prize for winning a regular Diamond Discipline event at a series meeting remains $10,000 (Ksh1,291,000), with the final offering a top prize of $30,000 (Ksh3,870,000). However, for Diamond+ Disciplines—special enhanced categories—the rewards will be even higher, with winners earning up to $20,000 (Ksh2,580,000) in series meetings and $50,000 (Ksh6,450,000) at the Final.

Each Wanda Diamond League meeting will feature four Diamond+ Disciplines, two for men and two for women, ensuring balanced opportunities for all athletes, including Kenya’s elite performers.

The total prize money for the 2025 season will reach $9.24 million (Ksh1,191,960,000)—the highest in the competition’s history. Factoring in promotional fees for top athletes, the total payout for the season is expected to exceed $18 million (Ksh2,322,000,000).

In addition to prize money, around $6 million (Ksh774,000,000) will be allocated for athlete services, including travel, accommodation, and medical support. This allocation will reduce the financial burden on athletes, enabling them to focus on their performances.

Kenyan athletes, renowned for their dominance in track and field, will now have a greater incentive to excel, with increased chances of financial rewards regardless of their finishing positions.
