The Ministry of Interior has highlighted several road blackspots across major highways in the country as part of efforts to minimize accidents during the festive season.
A blackspot is defined as a road section where numerous accidents involving fatalities or serious injuries have occurred in the past.
In Nairobi, notable blackspots include the Kasarani-GSU stretch, Westlands to Kabete Road, and Mombasa Road between Airtel Headquarters and Cabanas. Additional areas flagged include Jogoo Road near Maziwa Stage Footbridge, Waiyaki Way near Kangemi Fly-Over, Thika Road at Kenyatta University, and the Ruai Bypass. Langata Road near Carnivore Junction, the Eastern Bypass near Transami Footbridge, and the General Motors (GM) footbridge were also listed.
In the Coastal region, dangerous road sections highlighted include Tsavo-Maungu-Voi, Maungu-Tsavo East Gate, Mazeras-Miritini, and the Kilifi-Vipingo stretch. Other critical areas include Kibarani-Changamwe Makande, Kwale-Matuga Junction, Maji ya Chumvi, Uwanja wa Ndege, Maungu Area, and Malindi at Jiwe Tanga.
In Central Kenya, blackspots were identified along the Kiganjo-Narumor stretch, Kibirigwi-Sagana, Limuru-Uplands section, and the Thika Blue Post-Sagana Bridge road. Additional areas include Makutano-Embu, Kiriaini-Muranga, Nyeri-Nyahururu, Makongeni along Thika-Garissa Road, and Kiambu-Muthaiga Road.
The Rift Valley region also has several blackspots, including Molo GSU Camp in Salgaa, Timboroa-Burnt Forest section, Chepsir-Kipkelion Junction at Sachangwani, Kericho-Litein, and Kericho-Kaitui road sections. Other identified hotspots are Nanyuki-Isiolo Junction, Nyeri-Nyahururu Wiyumiririe Area, Narok-Mai Mahiu Junction, Kinyinyi along Narok Road, Katakala along Mulot-Narok Road, and Nakuru-Mau Summit Road.
In Western Kenya, blackspots include Mbale-Vihiga, Kakamega-Chavakali, Kakamega-Kisumu-Ilesi Museno Road, Kakamega-Mumias at Makunga, and Kakamega-Webuye-Lubao Highway.
The government has called on motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution while traveling during the holiday season to prevent road carnage and save lives.
