The Ministry of Education has refuted reports claiming it has raised the minimum university entry grade for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, the Ministry, led by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, flagged the reports as false. The rumors suggested that the minimum entry grade had been raised from C+ (plus) to B- (minus).

The clarification comes as KCSE candidates eagerly await their results, which are expected to be released in January 2025. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, December 11, CS Ogamba confirmed that the marking process is underway but refrained from giving a specific release date.

“We are currently marking the examinations, and once the results are ready, we will release them. I cannot provide a specific date as the process is still ongoing,” said Ogamba.

This year, a total of 965,501 candidates sat for the KCSE examinations across 10,754 centres nationwide.

On matters concerning examination integrity, CS Julius Migos assured the public that measures are in place to address any malpractice. He emphasized that instances of cheating would be dealt with on an individual basis rather than penalizing entire examination centres.

“In cases of examination malpractice, we will ensure that only the individuals involved face prosecution. If there is collusion, those responsible will be pursued individually,” Ogamba stated.

The Ministry’s move to individualize accountability aims to prevent innocent students from being penalized for the actions of others.
