The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a travel advisory for motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway after heavy traffic was reported on December 20, 2024.
The Authority has also provided alternative routes to ease congestion.
In a statement, KeNHA noted a surge in traffic along the Rironi–Naivasha–Nakuru (A8) Road and the Rironi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8S) Road, urging motorists to exercise patience and adhere to lane discipline for their safety and that of other road users.
“Motorists plying these routes are advised to exercise patience and observe lane discipline for their safety and that of other road users,” the statement read.
KeNHA assured travelers that it is working with traffic police to provide guidance and manage traffic flow to ensure smooth travel.
Alternative Routes Recommended
To avoid the congestion, motorists were advised to consider the following alternative routes:
- Naivasha–Njabini–Ol Kalou–Dundori–Lanet–Nakuru.
- Flyover–Njabini–Ol Kalou–Dundori–Lanet–Nakuru.
- Ngong–Suswa–Narok–Mau Narok–Nakuru.
“We wish you safe travels and a happy festive period,” KeNHA added.
St. John Ambulance Kenya had earlier raised the alarm about traffic buildup along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as Kenyans traveled for the festive season.
The organization advised travelers to avoid the highway, citing slow traffic between Kimende and the Flyover, and between Limuru and Mai Mahiu.
“Traffic alert: There is heavy traffic congestion along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway between Kimende and Flyover and also along Limuru–Mai Mahiu stretch. Avoid the area if you can,” St. John Ambulance stated.
Videos shared on social media showed long queues of vehicles, with passengers stepping out to stretch as they waited for the gridlock to ease. The situation was exacerbated by a truck overturning on the highway on the night of December 19, leading to overnight delays.
KeNHA and law enforcement agencies continue to work to manage the traffic and restore normalcy as the festive travel season peaks.
