Machakos County has announced plans to dispose of 46 unclaimed bodies currently lying at the Machakos Level 5 Mortuary and Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary in Athi River. The announcement, made on Wednesday, December 18, directed members of the public to identify and collect the bodies within seven days from December 17, 2024, failing which the county will seek legal authority for disposal.
The directive is in line with the Public Health Act Cap 242, Subsidiary Public Health (Public Mortuaries) Rules of 1991.
According to the county, 34 of the unclaimed bodies were brought in by police, while 12 were casualties or brought in by hospitals.
Unclaimed Bodies at Machakos Level 5 Mortuary
At the Level 5 Mortuary, there are 20 unclaimed bodies, 15 of which were brought in by police. Among them are:
- Two unknown males brought in by Tala Police on January 11 and Mbiuni Police on May 21, 2024.
- An unknown baby brought by Athi River Police on June 5, 2024.
- An unknown female brought by Kangundo Level 4 Hospital in July 2024.
- The body of Josephat Wambua, three unknown males, and two unknown fetuses brought by Kyumbi Police.
- Other unclaimed bodies include Veronica Kanini from Ward 2, an unknown male brought in on June 30, and an unknown fetus from Ward 5.
Machakos County is urging residents to assist in identifying the bodies to provide them with dignified burials and avoid unnecessary disposal.
