Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has confirmed that the government will resume the recruitment of police officers after a hiatus of over two years.
The Deputy President announced that 5,000 police officers will be recruited early next year as part of the government’s efforts to enhance security. The recruitment exercise is set to begin in March 2025, with the exact dates and venues to be announced in advance.
Speaking during an interdenominational service in Lodwar, Turkana County, on Sunday, December 15, Kindiki stated that the recruitment will not only address security needs but will also contribute to the government’s employment creation efforts.
“We have employed additional officers in the Kenya Defence Forces, and for those police officer recruitments that were delayed, we will be recruiting 5,000 officers in March. This is part of our broader effort to create more job opportunities both in the public and informal sectors,” Kindiki explained.
The last recruitment by the National Police Service was conducted in March 2022. Recruitment scheduled for 2023 was postponed, with Kindiki, who was the Interior Cabinet Secretary at the time, announcing that the exercise would take place in 2024. However, this was delayed further, and the Deputy President has now confirmed that it will occur in March 2025.
Kindiki also revealed that President William Ruto would soon announce a new Cabinet Secretary for Interior. He assured that his office would work closely with the new CS to address security concerns across the country.
“We are praying for a new Interior CS, who will soon be announced, and we will collaborate with him or her closely to build on the progress we have made so far,” Kindiki stated.
Previously, Kindiki served as the Interior CS before being appointed as Deputy President. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has been serving in the Interior role until a new appointment is made.
