Kenya Railways has added a stopover at Voi Station for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) night trains, responding to public demand.

In a statement dated Friday, November 13, the corporation announced that the change will take effect on Sunday, December 15, allowing the 10:00 pm Madaraka Express night trains to include a 3-minute stop at Voi Station.

“Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that effective December 15, 2024, the 10:00 pm Madaraka Express Passenger Service train to and from Nairobi Terminus will now make a 3-minute stopover at Voi Station,” the statement read.

According to the schedule, the Nairobi-to-Mombasa train will stop at Voi from 2:05 am to 2:08 am, while the Mombasa-to-Nairobi train will halt from 11:45 pm to 11:48 pm.

This adjustment comes after residents of Voi and surrounding areas appealed to President William Ruto to facilitate the stopover for night trains. While addressing Taita Taveta County residents on December 3, President Ruto directed the Ministry of Transport to implement the request.

Previously, only daytime trains made stops at Voi Station, limiting travel options for those heading to the town and its environs.

“Night trains depart both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini simultaneously at 10:00 pm. This service does not entail stops during the journey,” Kenya Railways had noted in its earlier itinerary.

The new directive is expected to improve convenience and accessibility for passengers traveling to and from Voi during night hours.
