The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services has announced an accelerated process for granting dual citizenship to Kenyans in the diaspora who lost their citizenship before the enactment of the 2010 Constitution.
In a statement on Friday, December 13, the department explained that the initiative aims to enable Kenyans abroad to transact and conduct business more freely back home.
“The State Department has committed to fast-tracking dual citizenship for Kenyans living abroad who lost their citizenship under the old constitution to enable them to freely transact and invest back in the country.
“Migration allows for diversity in culture and promotes business interactions and growth. Kenya prides itself as a promoter of safe and efficient migration through its Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA),” read part of the statement.
Speaking during the ‘Step Up 4 Safe Migration’ walk at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Immigration Principal Secretary Julius Bitok reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enabling those affected by the old laws to reclaim their citizenship.
“Today at the COMESA grounds, Kenyatta International Convention Centre, I flagged off the ‘Step Up 4 Safe Migration’ walk to mark International Migrants Day. This annual event advocates for safe, efficient, and orderly migration between nations,” Bitok stated.
He further highlighted the government’s efforts to promote labor migration and create opportunities for Kenyans abroad while attracting investment and expertise into the country.
“We are focused on making it easier for Kenyans who renounced their citizenship before the 2010 Constitution to reclaim it. At the same time, we are working to promote labor migration and open up opportunities for Kenyans abroad,” he added.
