Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced plans to rename one of the roads in South C after the late hip-hop artist Issah Mmari Wangui, popularly known as E-Sir.
Speaking on Thursday, December 12, during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Sakaja revealed that Nairobi County would honour artists by renaming some roads in recognition of their contributions to the creative industry.
“Nairobi stands as a creative and cultural hub in this region. Our artists, musicians, and performers not only enrich our lives but also drive economic growth. I would like us all to applaud the young people who performed today because they have done a remarkable job,” Sakaja stated.
“We shall be honouring our artists by renaming some of the roads. For instance, one of the roads in South C will be renamed after the great hero E-Sir, whose brother performed here today.” He further explained.
E-Sir’s brother, Habib, was among the artists who entertained guests during the 61st Jamhuri Day celebrations.
Sakaja also emphasized Nairobi County’s commitment to fostering the creative industry by providing opportunities for talent development and market access.
“We are committed to nurturing this sector by creating platforms for talent development and expanding market opportunities. The creative industry has grown significantly in recent years, and Nairobi is now able to attract major artists both locally and internationally,” Sakaja remarked.
E-Sir, widely regarded as a pioneer of Kenyan hip-hop, tragically passed away on March 16, 2003, in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
