Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has lauded the recent meeting between President William Ruto and his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, calling it a positive step toward national unity and stability.
In a statement following the meeting held on Monday, December 9, at Uhuru’s Ichaweri residence in Gatundu, Kindiki said the reconciliation between the two leaders bodes well for the country’s development.
“Rapprochement between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta works well for national unity, stability, and enables the country to collectively focus on addressing national development priorities,” Kindiki remarked.
This marked the first private meeting between the two leaders, who have previously only interacted during public engagements. According to a statement from State House, their discussions centered on matters of national and regional importance, with an emphasis on fostering a harmonious working relationship among all Kenyans.
During the meeting, Ruto praised Uhuru for his statesmanship during the peaceful transfer of power after the 2022 elections and acknowledged his continued goodwill toward the country’s progress.
The two leaders also addressed the ongoing reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which has been delayed by a court injunction challenging the selection panel. They called for a swift resolution of the legal matters to facilitate the appointment of new commissioners.
On Kenya’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, Ruto and Uhuru rallied support for Raila Odinga’s candidacy ahead of the February 2025 elections. They urged Kenyans, international partners, and friends of Kenya to back Raila for the continental role.
The leaders also touched on regional matters, acknowledging Kenya’s pivotal role in promoting peace and security in the East African region through diplomatic and peace support initiatives. They emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts and restoring stability in the region.
Uhuru continues to serve as the AU-Kenya Peace Envoy and Facilitator of the EAC-Led Nairobi Peace Process, roles that have cemented Kenya’s position as a key player in regional peacebuilding efforts.
