Outrage as citizen TV journalist harassed by security agent in viral incident

A Citizen TV journalist was reportedly harassed by a security agent on Thursday in an incident that has sparked widespread condemnation on social media.

In a video that has since gone viral, a man in a black suit is seen aggressively attempting to confiscate a camera from the journalist, who clings tightly to it. The struggle is evident as the man forcibly tries to seize the equipment, repeatedly stating, “utaivunja” (you will break it) and demanding the journalist to let go with the words, “achilia” (let it go).

Despite the security agent’s persistent attempts, the journalist refused to relinquish the camera. The incident has ignited serious concerns about the safety and rights of journalists, particularly in environments where they may face harassment or intimidation while performing their duties.

The involvement of security personnel has raised questions about a possible deliberate attempt to obstruct the journalist from documenting or reporting events, potentially infringing on press freedom.

The journalist was at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters following the summons of Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa. The area was under heavy police presence, with anti-riot officers deployed ahead of Thang’wa’s arrival for questioning in connection with the chaos at a Limuru funeral.

Also summoned to the DCI offices was former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi. Police confirmed that additional officers had been deployed outside the Mazingira Building to avert any potential unrest.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism from Kenyans online, with many demanding accountability and action against the security agent involved.
