Kenya Railways Announces Resumption of Kisumu Safari Train.

Kenya Railways (KR) has announced the highly anticipated resumption of the Kisumu Safari train service, offering travelers a convenient and affordable transport option as the festive season approaches.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 3, Kenya Railways confirmed that the service will officially resume on December 6, 2024, with specific guidelines for passengers.

“We are pleased to announce that our Kisumu Safari train service has resumed,” the statement read.

Passengers traveling from Nairobi to Kisumu will need to board three connecting trains. The journey begins at Nairobi Central Station, where the train departs every Friday at 4:00 pm and arrives in Kisumu the following morning at 6:30 am.

According to the route schedule, travelers will:

  • Depart Nairobi Central Station at 4:00 pm.
  • Board the Madaraka Express train from Nairobi Terminus to Maai Mahiu Station at 5:20 pm.
  • Transfer to an MGR train, which departs Maai Mahiu Station at 6:55 pm, arriving in Kisumu at 6:30 am.

Ticket prices are set at KSh 900 for economy class and KSh 2,400 for first class, with first-class passengers enjoying premium services throughout their journey.

Kenya Railways has advised passengers to adhere to luggage restrictions, which allow items no wider than 160 cm and no longer than 200 cm. Travelers are also encouraged to arrive at the station at least one hour before departure to avoid inconvenience.

The resumption of the Kisumu Safari train service is expected to ease congestion on roads as Kenyans travel to celebrate the holidays. The affordable and efficient service provides an alternative to long road journeys, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience for passengers.

Kenya Railways has also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing transport services through strategic reforms. Earlier this year, the organization announced plans to acquire 480 wagons to increase passenger and cargo transport capacity and rehabilitate key railway routes.
