Residents of Voi, in Taita Taveta County, received exciting news from President William Ruto on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, as he announced that the Madaraka Express train will resume a night stopover in the town starting December 15, 2024. The president confirmed that the Kenya Railways management had been directed to implement the change, fulfilling the long-standing request from local residents.
Speaking during the launch of the Devki Iron Ore Pelletization plant in Manga, President Ruto assured the crowd that their plea for a night stopover would be honored, facilitating easier travel and continued business operations in the region.
“I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15, the train will start the night stopover at Voi,” President Ruto declared.
Previously, the Madaraka Express made only daytime stopovers in Voi, leaving residents without nighttime travel options. With the new directive, however, the train will begin stopping at Voi during the night, offering a convenient travel option for those looking to journey after dark. The Madaraka Express, which departs both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini at 10:00 pm, typically does not make stops during its overnight journey. This change will benefit many residents and travelers in the area.
Additionally, President Ruto announced the reopening of the Ikanga Airport in Voi, which had been closed due to unresolved issues. The president confirmed that the airport would officially resume operations on December 15, 2024, after completing all necessary improvements.
“We have completed everything entailed with the Ikanga Airport, and I am happy to inform you that it will be back in operation on December 15,” President Ruto said, adding that the reopening would not only benefit local residents but also himself, as he had been unable to use the airport due to its closure.
The Ikanga Airstrip, which was 98% complete by 2021, is expected to boost the region’s tourism sector, with Taita Taveta Trade and Tourism Executive Vumi Ringo noting its potential to enhance local economic growth.
In his remarks, President Ruto also praised Devki Steel Mills for their contribution to national economic development and urged Kenyans to embrace private investments that foster growth and job creation.
The president’s announcements have sparked excitement among Voi residents, who now look forward to improved transportation and increased tourism opportunities, signaling a significant boost to the region’s economy.
