Ruto Elected as East African Community Chairman

Date:

President William Ruto has been elected the chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir.

Ruto will serve in the position for the next one year, following his appointment during the 24th Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State held in Arusha, Tanzania.

The summit brought together regional leaders to discuss critical issues shaping the future of East Africa. This year’s gathering coincided with the EAC’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, providing a platform to reflect on the bloc’s achievements over the past quarter-century and outline strategies for deeper integration.

Key agenda items included enhancing the region’s economic resilience, advancing peace and security, and promoting initiatives aimed at boosting intra-regional trade and development.
