JKIA & 3 Airports in Kenya Recognised in Latest Certification

Date:

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced that it has attained Level 3 Certification under the Airport Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Programme.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 27, KAA disclosed that the certification recognizes various environmental programs implemented across Kenya’s major airports, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Other airports that received the recognition include Moi International Airport (MIA) in Mombasa, Eldoret International Airport (EIA), and Kisumu International Airport (KIA).

“This significant milestone places these airports among an elite group in East and Central Africa,” the statement read.

The ACA Level 3 certification focuses on Optimization and Airport Stakeholder Engagement, reflecting KAA’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its strategic commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, with an ultimate goal of achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2050.

KAA attributed the achievement to the implementation of various green initiatives at the airports:

At JKIA, energy-efficient infrastructure and renewable energy sources have been developed to minimize carbon emissions.

Moi International Airport has adopted measures such as solar energy utilization, LED lighting, and regular maintenance of equipment to reduce its carbon footprint.

At Kisumu International Airport, solar streetlights and a green terminal building highlight the commitment to sustainability.

Eldoret International Airport has upgraded its lighting systems, replacing mercury vapor lights with LED fittings and installing solar-powered bollard lights in the concourse area.

KAA noted that this recognition underscores its unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable practices within the aviation industry and fostering a greener future for Kenya.

“The ACA Level 3 certification demonstrates KAA’s relentless efforts in promoting environmental stewardship while positioning our airports as leaders in sustainability within the region,” the Authority stated.
