President William Ruto has announced the allocation of Ksh2.7 billion to address frequent accidents in Lake Victoria.
Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday, November 26, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to establishing a rescue and coordination center to ensure timely response to accidents in the lake.
“Due to the frequent major accidents and the loss of many lives because of inadequate facilities and improper infrastructure, we have decided to set up a Lake Victoria Rescue and Coordination Center,” President Ruto stated.
He added, “We are investing Ksh2.7 billion to ensure any accident in Lake Victoria is attended to promptly. This will enhance support for the ecosystem and ensure safety moving forward.”
Boat accidents in Lake Victoria, particularly around Kisumu, are often linked to mechanical failures, inadequate safety equipment, and adverse weather conditions.
One recent incident involved four Coast Guard officers who narrowly escaped when their boat capsized near Ndere Island on August 30, 2024.
The officers were patrolling the lake when their vessel developed mechanical complications, causing it to take on water.
According to the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), the officers were en route to Kisumu station from Siaya and Homa Bay when the accident occurred. A coordinated eight-hour rescue mission involving KCGS officers, Beach Management Unit (BMU) members, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel saved the officers.
“All officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition. The swift coordination among BMUs and agencies involved showcased the highest standards of maritime safety, ensuring the officers’ rescue,” KCGS noted in a statement.
The government’s new measures aim to enhance safety and prevent similar incidents, signaling a significant step toward improving maritime safety in the region.
