Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced his intention to vie for the presidency once his term as county governor concludes.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, November 25, Natembeya expressed his commitment to pursuing the country’s top seat as the next step in his political journey.
“Everything in politics is possible, but from where I sit, once I’m done with the job that the people of Trans Nzoia have given me, my eyes are set firmly on the presidency,” he stated.
Natembeya ruled out the possibility of seeking a deputy position, emphasizing the limitations faced by second-in-command leaders. He noted that deputies often struggle to implement change due to their restricted roles and the political risks of offering advice that may not sit well with others.
“You can’t change things when you are a deputy. The room for maneuver is very limited, and sometimes just giving advice can cause your impeachment,” he added.
Elected as Trans Nzoia’s governor on August 9, 2022, Natembeya garnered 158,919 votes, significantly outpacing his closest competitor, Chris Wamalwa of Ford Kenya, who received 79,020 votes. Following his victory, Natembeya called for unity among leaders to ensure progress for the residents of Trans Nzoia.
“It is with profound humility that I accept the overwhelming support that I have been shown by the residents of Trans Nzoia, bestowing me with the privilege of being their governor. To my competitor, I request we join hands to transform Trans Nzoia. This victory belongs to the people, and it would be an honor as leaders to focus on bringing change,” he said at the time.
Before transitioning into politics, Natembeya had a distinguished career in public service. He began his journey in 1996 as a District Officer, serving in various regions including Trans Mara and Nakuru. He later became a Personal Assistant to the late John Michuki, the former Minister for Security.
Over the years, Natembeya held several key administrative roles, including County Commissioner for Isiolo and Narok and Regional Commissioner for the Rift Valley.
His academic background includes both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Nairobi, equipping him with a strong foundation for his leadership roles.
Natembeya’s declaration sets the stage for his entry into national politics, positioning him as a new contender in the race for Kenya’s top leadership.
