WhatsApp introduces voice message transcription feature

Date:

WhatsApp has unveiled a new update that allows users to transcribe voice messages into text, announced on November 21, 2024. This feature is a game-changer for those who may not be able to listen to voice notes immediately.

“Transcripts for voice messages are rolling out now! So, when you can’t listen right away, you have the option to read them,” WhatsApp shared.

Meta-owned WhatsApp aims to enhance user experience and streamline communication for its massive audience.

The feature is designed to maintain user privacy and security, with all messages, including voice messages and their transcripts, being protected by end-to-end encryption.

“Transcripts are generated on your device, ensuring that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can listen to or read your personal messages,” the platform assured users.

Voice messages, introduced in 2013, quickly became one of WhatsApp’s most popular features, allowing users to share information instantly.

The new transcription feature adds versatility by giving users the option to read messages when listening is not possible.

This feature is particularly useful when receiving longer voice messages or when in noisy environments, WhatsApp explained.

To activate the transcription feature, users can open WhatsApp, go to the settings menu, and select “Chats.” From there, they can find the new “Voice Message Transcripts” option, which can be turned on or off, and set the preferred transcription language.

“Once activated, transcribing a voice message is simple,” WhatsApp said. Users can long-press the voice message they wish to transcribe and tap “Transcribe.” The transcript will appear on the screen, making it easier to follow conversations without the need for headphones or a quiet space.

“We’re excited to build on this experience and make it even better and more seamless,” WhatsApp added. The company revealed that additional languages will be added as the feature rolls out globally in the coming weeks, initially supporting English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.
