Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has defended President William Ruto and other politicians for donating to churches, amid criticism from the public.
In a video shared on his social media on Tuesday, November 11, Sudi argued that politicians were often approached by church leaders seeking financial assistance for various projects.
He maintained that politicians would continue supporting churches, emphasizing that they are also part of the Christian community.
Sudi further appealed to church leaders to forgive politicians for any wrongdoings and to provide guidance to the current political leadership where necessary.
“I can see that the Bishops are unhappy and now want to refund the money donated to the church. I ask for forgiveness because sometimes we go directly to local churches without consulting them,” Sudi said. “I don’t understand where the problem is.”
His remarks came after the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi announced that it would decline donations made by President Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during a service on Sunday, November 10.
Archdiocese Bishop Philip Anyolo cited the backlash from Kenyans who questioned why the Head of State was going against his directive barring government officials from participating in fundraising activities in churches.
The debate has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some defending the donations as acts of goodwill while others criticized them as contrary to the government’s own policies.
