The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has strongly condemned the use of school uniforms as costumes in adult entertainment venues, describing the trend as unlawful, socially unacceptable, and harmful to children.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 18, 2025, KEWOPA argued that school uniforms, which symbolise innocence, discipline, and learning, must never be “reduced to an object of adult fantasy or profit.”

The lawmakers warned that the practice risks normalising the sexualisation of minors and could encourage underage drinking.

Citing Section 46 of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act (2010), the Children Act (2022), and NACADA’s Alcoholic Drinks Control Promotions Guidelines, KEWOPA said the law explicitly prohibits linking alcohol promotion to minors or using school-related imagery in marketing.

The association called on regulatory agencies including NACADA, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), and the Ministry of Interior to take immediate action against establishments promoting the trend.

KEWOPA further urged entertainment spots to apologise publicly and abandon exploitative marketing strategies. Local authorities were also asked to intensify monitoring and revoke licenses for clubs that continue with such practices.

“School uniforms belong exclusively to children and should remain as such. Their use in adult settings grossly distorts their true meaning and carries troubling implications for society,” the statement read in part.

The condemnation comes after a video from a Nakuru club went viral showing hostesses dressed in school uniforms during a promotional event, sparking widespread outrage online. Many Kenyans argued that the act demeaned education and disrespected children’s identities.

KEWOPA maintained that safeguarding the dignity of children is a collective responsibility and urged the entertainment industry to uphold moral and legal standards that protect minors from exploitation.
